Article #15 - Generating an Ethereal Line Trace
Updated:02-18-2006 - Views: 1019
Ethereal Line Trace Utility
Ethereal is an open source software program that is freely available for downloading and using. General information about Ethereal can be found at http://www.ethereal.com.

Ethereal Downloads
Ethereal requires two separate applications to capture a line trace. Both must be installed to capture line traces.

1. Go to the Ethereal download site:
http://www.ethereal.com/download.html

2. Under the Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003 Installers, choose a FTP site such as USA.

3. Download the most recent Ethereal file such as ?ethereal-setup-0.10.7.exe?.

4. Download the most recent packet capture utility such as ?WinPcap_3_0.exe?.

Quick Setup Instructions

The following are the instructions on how to find, download and run the Ethereal software.

1. Create a new folder on the desktop and call it 'Ethereal'.

2. Go to: http://winpcap.polito.it/install/default.htm

3. Select: WinPcap auto-installer (driver +DLLs) and SAVE to the Ethereal folder.

4. Next go to:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ethereal/ethereal-setup-0.10.8.exe?use_mirror=internap

5. Select any of the download options and SAVE to the Ethereal folder.

6. After the downloads are complete, go to Ethereal Folder and double click on the WinPcap file and install the program using the default settings.

7. Do the same for the Ethereal file download.

8. Once both files have been extracted, a new icon should have been created on the desktop. Go to the desktop and double click the Ethereal Icon.

9. Select Capture, Capture Filters, New and use the following values.
a. Name: host
b. String: host 10.60.1.191 (use the IP address of the target device)

10. Save and Close

11. Select Capture, Start, Capture Filter, Select: Host, OK (Capture Starts)

12. Once the Capture has started, a Communications Trace can also be done on the AS400. (Check the knowledge base for instructions on generating an IBM Host Comm. Trace.)

13. Print the same type of print jobs from the AS400 to the printer. Once completed (or stuck in pending for approximately 5 minutes), the Communications Trace and Ethereal Capture can be stopped. Save both files and e-mail to I-O Corporation.

NOTE: Make sure that the PC is located on the same Ethernet link as the printer. If a Ethernet switch is used, it may be necessary to open the connection the PC is on so the Ethereal capture software can see all LAN traffic going to and from the printer. If the switch does not have this capability, a ?hub? will need to be installed with the PC and the printer connected directly to the hub.
