IPDS, PCL & Edge-to-Edge Printing

Often certain IPDS jobs will not print correctly on PCL based printers. This is because IBM IPDS printers have the capability of printing to a larger area on a page than most PCL printers.

For example, on 8-1/2? x 11? (letter size) paper IPDS uses a printable area of 8-1/6? x 10-2/3? with a 1/6? (4 mm) margin on all sides. PCL uses a printable area of 8? x 10-1/2? with a ?? (approximately 6.4 mm) margin on all sides.

When an IPDS job that has been designed to use the larger printable area is sent to a PCL printer, often data is clipped (typically on the left and bottom sides though clipping can occur on all four sides), or the alignment of the various objects (logos, images, text and forms) will be off.

It should be noted that IPDS does have the capability of printing to the physical edge of the paper, but IBM does not recommend edge-to-edge printing as the printer will become contaminated with toner. This will result in more service calls and potentially shorter life of the product.

There is one HP PCL printer that will print edge-to-edge ? the HP LaserJet 9000 (and its family of derivative printers). This printer is capable of an expanded printable area that only requires a 1.6 mm margin on all edges.

It is suggested that edge-to-edge jobs sent to an edge-to-edge PCL printer such as the HP LaserJet 9000 equipped with an I-O IPDS DIMM, or connected to an I-O 5435e IPDS Print Server or the high-speed I-O 5755e IPDS Printer Gateway.
