Article #59 - My 8x94 controller won't boot. What can I do?
Updated:02-10-2006 - Views: 532
If there is no disk error light on the disk drive check the MPIC card LED's and the Twinax card / card's LED on the back side of the controller.

Twinax cards have two ports where twinax pigtlets are attached. There is one LED located next to each twinax port. With no piglet attached, or with no twinax cable and devices attached to the piglet, once the controller has booted, the led will blink. With twinax devices attached and powered on, the LED should be constantly on.

Under normal conditions the five LED's on the MPIC card will be out. If any MPIC LED is on use the 8x94 manual to decode the led error pattern.

Turn the controller off and carefully label all cables. Disconnect all cables from the controller and begin a normal boot process. Monitor the MPIC LED's. After waiting the normal amount of time required to boot, again check the MPIC LED's. If the LED's have a different pattern, or if all MPIC LED's are out there is a high probability of a twinax line or twinax device problem with one or more of the disconnected twinax cables.

Power off the controller and connect one twinax cable to the proper connector. Boot the controller in normal mode and again check the MPIC LED's. Continue to add or remove twinax cables one at a time until the offending cable has been identified.

Leaving the offending cable disconnected from the controller, attempt to boot the controller in normal mode. If the controller boots you can be certain the problem resides with a pigtail, device, or the twinax cable itself that should normally be connected to the now empty twinax port.
