Instructions for assigning a static IP address to an I-O Print Server.

  1. Using the I-O Print Control Utility (PCU) or Configuration Utility (CU) to assign static IP to an I-O Print Server (PS) can be done via any of the following methods.Load the PCU or CU onto a PC on the same LAN segment as the PS. There can be no switch or router between the PC and PS for the initial setup unless there is a DHCP server on the LAN. When scanning for PS?s on the LAN the I-O PS initiates a UDP broadcast that is blocked by the switch or router. A hub will pass the UDP broadcast and allow the PC with PCU or CU loaded to see the PS and then assign a static IP address. Once a static IP address is assigned any PC with the PCU or CU loaded, located anywhere on the LAN can see and make changes to the I-O PS.

  2. If there is a DHCP server on the LAN the I-O PS will automatically be assigned an IP address. Using the I-O supplied PCU or CU on a PC attached to the LAN the user can then scan for the specific IP address assigned by DHCP and change this IP address to a static IP address as desired.

  3. Using a stand alone PC (not connected to the LAN), with a NIC card and a crossover cable, attach the I-O PS. Start the PCU or CU, scan and assign the desired IP address. Exit PCU or CU normally and follow the prompts, resetting the box when prompted. Power off the PS, connect the PS to the LAN as desired, power on the PS and now the PS will be seen on the LAN with the desired IP address.

Once the PS has been assigned an IP address, and any other configuration changes are made to reflect the attached printer and desired method of communicating with the AS/400 (Tn5250, SNA or AnyNet), the printer attached to the I-O PS will function as desired, printing from both the LAN and AS/400.

It is important to note that the I-O PS must print a configuration report to the attached or target printer in order to successfully print from the AS/400. The only exception to this is when a specialty printer such as a thermal barcode printer or an embosser is the target printer.

If attempts to establish communication between the print server and PCU or CU are unsuccessful, restoring factory defaults should resolve the issue. Restoring defaults is accomplished by holding down the mode button for approximately 15 seconds after applying power to the unit. After the reset, scan the local subnet to show the device in the PCU or CU window.
